Creativity... Again?

It appears that I have go over the topic of creativity once more. Well... having had a few lectures about the topic with Mike I guess there is room for changes on what we understand about creativity.

Based on what I have been taught, creativity the is the act of producing/creating things which will serve a meaningful purpose. A thing Mike mentioned about the common belief about children being incredibly creative is that it is complete nonsense and that children are not creative because the things they produce serve no purpose whatsoever. I question his understanding of what creativity is. Do the things that a person produce really need to serve a meaning in order to make that person creative?

In my opinion I think everything we make and do serves a purpose, even the simple things that children make. Our lives are full of obstacles and objectives. What we then try to do is work towards overcoming those obstacles. Those obstacles and objectives can come in many forms, some we fail to see or notice. A pretty common and often overlooked obstacle is boredom. Kids as we all know are attention seeking and hyper-active creatures that get bored easily. Their way to overcome their boredom is create ways to entertain themselves.

Of course another point that Mike made is that the things that are created needs to have some value. The things that children make may not to be of any value to Mike but what about the children? Surely they value their own creations. An object's value has always been a subjective matter, hence the quote "One man's trash is another's treasure", so unless no one values the things then the person who creates them has a hint creativity.
